A charming “pocket-sized” Essex village has been named one of the best places to live in the UK.

Manningtree made lifestyle website Muddy Stilettos’ list of the UK’s top 260 locations, praised for its charm, community spirit and riverside setting.

It was one of only eight Essex locations to make the list.

Muddy Stilettos said: "Manningtree may be pocket-sized, but it packs plenty in: River Stour views, thriving indies, a buzzy foodie and arts scene, proper community spirit and London within commuting distance.

"No wonder everyone’s suddenly talking about it."

The website praised Manningtree’s independent businesses, cultural events and community spirit.

Among the town’s highlights are its award-nominated eateries and shops, including Estuary Wine Bar and Lucca, both 2026 Muddy Awards finalists.

The Wholefood Store was also a 2026 Muddy Awards finalist.

The town also offers scenic walks to Dedham and Flatford, along with plenty of outdoor exercise.

Muddy Stilettos said: "Keeping fit is pleasingly outdoorsy here — pull on your trainers and walk towards Dedham or Flatford for countryside cardio with a view."

Community events are central to Manningtree’s appeal, from school choirs on the beach to Manningtree Has Pride and the PACE Earth Festival.

Families have several nurseries and well-rated schools to choose from, including Manningtree High School, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2025.

Nearby independent schools include Holmwood House and St Mary’s in Colchester, Littlegarth in Nayland and Orwell Park in Nacton.

Manningtree is also home to tennis player Henry Patten, who has won the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and the 2025 Australian Open.

Direct trains to London Liverpool Street take around an hour, making the town popular with commuters.

An annual season ticket costs £7,488, rising to £8,980 with a London Travelcard covering Zones 1–6.

Despite its commuter appeal, house prices remain relatively affordable compared with other towns on the London line.

The average house price over the past year was £353,389. Detached homes averaged £485,478, semi-detached properties £310,674 and terraces £275,282.

The Manningtree Arts Trail features 32 artists across 19 venues, underlining the town’s thriving cultural scene.

The award-winning Manifest Theatre stages productions and runs a junior group for young performers.

Muddy Stilettos said: "Culture without the commute? We’re sold."
