A new supermarket has opened its doors, bringing jobs and fresh shopping options to the community.

The Sainsbury’s store on Foundry Lane in Burnham officially opened at 9am today (October 29), creating 30 new roles and welcoming former East of England Co-op employees to the team.

Ahead of the opening, Jo Bojas, store manager at Sainsbury’s Burnham, said: "It's been great getting to know Burnham over the last few months and we can't wait to open our doors and start welcoming shoppers in.

"There’s been lots of work going on behind the scenes to get the store ready and we can’t wait to see what people think."

The first 500 customers through the doors received a limited-edition canvas bag featuring artwork created by pupils from St Mary’s Primary School and Burnham Primary School.

Sainsbury’s supported the local community ahead of its opening through a range of activities, including free drop-in sessions, a social supermarket in partnership with Maldon and District CVS, and sponsorship of the Burnham Carnival.

The new store offers the full Sainsbury’s range of fresh food, along with click-and-collect services for Argos, Habitat, and Tu Clothing.

Customers can also take advantage of the Nectar loyalty scheme from day one, enjoying personalised offers and exclusive Nectar Prices.

The opening in Burnham follows the launch of a Sainsbury’s store in Brightlingsea last summer, also on a former East of England Co-op site.

In May, Sainsbury’s announced plans to add more than 400,000 square feet of new supermarket space over two years, marking its largest investment in expansion in recent years.

At the time, the retailer also revealed plans to open 25 new convenience stores in 2026 and 2027, aiming to bring more than 700,000 additional people within a ten-minute drive of a Sainsbury’s location.

Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second-largest supermarket group, has continued to report resilient trading despite wider economic uncertainty, focusing on value, customer loyalty, and targeted growth.
